New Zealand’s beautiful native bush can make for some great images, and you might just spot some wildlife!
Finding the right location is key! I recommend doing some research using Google images to zoom in and look at areas of native bush that might be interesting to visit. Then pack a picnic and explore to find places that you would like to use in your photo shoot.
Is there somewhere close to your home that’s special or that you regularly walk through? My family has a favourite bushwalk and having our family photos taken there made them very special and even more memorable.
Lighting in the bush can be tricky. Being on the edge of the bush is usually the best for lighting and will give you the most flattering pictures. Look for clearings or find somewhere with a path using white shell, for example, which will reflect light up onto your faces. If there’s a water source, using a river, lake or a clearing with a stream running through it, will provide some interest and as a bonus, the water will reflect the light.
I also look for interesting trees and large colour blocks of one flower for beautiful backgrounds. Any buildings, barns, shelters or arbours of trees can also make fantastic backdrops.
Make sure to consider the time of year. In autumn, look for areas where you’ll get beautiful colours in the leaves. In spring you’ll get lots of new growth and the greens will be brighter. Even the colours you wear can make a difference, see my blog on what to wear for advice.
So why not get to it and have fun finding areas of native bush where you could go for a photo shoot!
