So many gorgeous images from this Engagement shoot!
Thanks Lisa and James.
View fullsize It was a drizzly early Sunday morning on the North Shore in Auckland and we headed to James family farm for their engagement shoot.
I just love the moodyness of the light. It will be a complete contrast to their wedding later this year... I can't wait to see these two tie the knot!
I love it when my couples have a personal connection to a place, and I am able to include that in either their engagement or wedding images for them. This makes it super special!
I have a few more gorgeous gems to share from their dreamy engagement shoot so keep an eye out!
View fullsize Auckland City, always a winner! I love shooting in my home town so much to explore and so many fantastic locations. If you are getting married in the city I’d always encourage my couples to have their complementary engagement photos with me at a more rural location, and vice versa! I love providing plenty of variety for my couples! <3

And a big congratulations to these 2 who will join the world of parenting later this year! Xox all the best guys

View fullsize Family shoots are about interactions, I barely ever ask a family to look at the camera. I want to capture the relationship between everyone, little moments and funny quirks that are unique to you. I love this image of Tarryn and Ryan, the kids had run off again into the water, the light was perfect and they looked so loving and relaxed together I had to capture that..... Thats how I work, I don’t like to give a huge amount of direction in my family shoots (unless it’s needed) ... I want it to be natural, I want to discover how the family is together the things that make them they.... I had noticed how connected Tarryn and Ryan were earlier on the shoot, the brush of his hand across her back, little kisses and a brief cuddle here and there. I know Tarryn is always behind the camera and like most couples after kids there won’t be many images of them together without their kids so it was important to capture that. Thanks again guys it was a blast! X
View fullsize During Lockdown I spent a lot of time with my camera and with my kids... I hadn't used my 35mm film camera in about 15 years and some other awesome photographers I know use film a lot and they inspired me to pick mine up again.
The camera is an old Canon F1 its metal bodied and completely manual, I only have one lens for it which is an old scratched up 100mm.... Im so glad I did it! ... many of the shots were blurry and some of the carpet, or my leg haha while I was remembering where all the settings are etc.
Anyway it reminded me there is more than one way to shoot. My style these days is quite fluid, I take so many more shots with my digital camera than I ever did with film and I shoot a lot more movement, which I love.

I think part of being able to be creative and produce fresh images that I am excited about is always pushing myself, even if I fail (and I had many fails on that roll of film) I learnt things about myself and the way I work, I value the speed and ease of digital photography more than I did before, but there is a feeling and texture to film images that will always be different to digital. I want to do more!
Here is one frame of Izzy my daughter while we were skating during lockdown. This is the original scan of the 35mm image, no editing. Its not perfect but thats ok, I learnt a heck of a lot shooting this roll of B&W film and I kinda love it ... What do you do to keep yourself engaged in your work, or hobbies.....What have you done lately to re ignite your passion or inspire you?

Photo shoot winners of the Harcourts Cooper and Co lockdown family bubble competition.
View fullsize I had such fun shooting the winners of the Harcourts Cooper and Co Lockdown family photo winners last week. Tarryn, Ryan and their cheeky gorgeous 3 boys on a sunny winters evening at Takapuna Beach!
I just love the connection the have to each other, their playfulness and energy! Going with the flow on family shoots is definately the best approch for me, especially when the youngest wont stay out of the water, which I personally love!
I feel family photos should say something about your family, how you relate to one another, your childrens interests and obsessions, showing the relationship you all have with one another right now. They should tell your story and when you look at them you should feel your familys energy and distinct personality shining out.
Thanks Donaldsons for being you!
So many more images to share from this shoot too! x

Beautiful Family Photos No Matter The Season

July 23, 2018

I often get asked when is the best time of year to have a family photo session. I always say you’ll never get this time again - your kids will grow, change, lose teeth and what they love today, they may intensely dislike tomorrow! Embrace it all, they are only young once and the best time to capture you all is right now!

So, while there isn’t one “best time”, here are some of my tips for a memorable family photo session, no matter what time of year it is.

Winter Photo Sessions

The trees are bare and ethereal looking, and the winter light is generally soft, even and flattering on the skin. Think fun snuggly images, gumboots and scarfs streaming out as you all run around to keep warm and make some awesome memories! The light is amazing at the end of the day in winter, and this can be the best time to get beautiful sunset images for young families, since it happens at around 5.30pm in the winter months.

Family Photos in Spring

The light is still soft in spring, similar to during the winter months. There are loads of new growth and fresh green shoots in the trees… it gives a sense of newness and freshness to your photos. It’s also warm enough to dip your toes at the beach, and play a bit in the sand.

Summer Photos in the Sunshine

Think bright and colourful, very strong clear light and lots of backlit images with sunny halos. Bare feet, tanned skin, shorts, tees and cute, frilly dresses. Summer is the best time to include water, which ideal for children to play, let loose and be themselves. Head to the beach, or even use the hose at home! You’ll get great images in the early morning or late in the evening before sunset… although since sunset in summer is around 9pm, this usually works better for older families.

Photos in Autumn

So much colour! The trees are amazing and your kids playing in the leaves adds an air of whimsy and fun to your images. The light is a bit softer than summer and it’s not too cold yet, so you can still pull out those summery clothes. The beaches and parks tend to be less crowded and foggy, misty, crisp mornings look amazing if you are lucky enough!

Give me a call or email me and we can talk through how to make your photos the absolute best they can be. Maybe you’ve thought of some fab new ideas you’d like to try too!
